ITOCHU ENEX Announces Opening of Japan's First Permanent Renewable Diesel Refueling Station
Project for improving convenience of renewable fuels in land transportation in Japan

ITOCHU ENEX CO.,LTD. (headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo; Kenji Okada, President & Chief Executive Officer; hereinafter "ITOCHU ENEX") announced today that it has started operation of Japan's first*1 renewable diesel (RD) refueling station [for commercial trucks] (hereinafter, "the project") in cooperation with ITOCHU Corporation (headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo; Keita Ishii, President & COO; hereinafter “ITOCHU”) and TOHBU NETWORK CO., LTD. (headquartered in Yokohama city, Kanagawa; Yoshitaka Wakayama, Representative Director President and Chief Executive Officer; hereinafter "TOHBU NETWORK"). Triggered by the project, ITOCHU ENEX will enter the renewable resource-based fuel (hereinafter "renewable fuel") supply business in the land transportation field in Japan in earnest, aiming to realize a circular economy and carbon-free society.

The project is intended to start operation of an RD refueling station by using the underground tank for fuel installed in TOHBU NETWORK's Ebina Office (Ebina city, Kanagawa). Using the refueling station makes it possible for many cargo owner companies and land shipping companies to use RD, which allows a reduction in GHG emissions. It will be the first permanent RD refueling station to be built in Japan.

ITOCHU concluded an RD import contract for domestic use in Japan with Neste OYJ Group (headquartered in Finland; Peter Vanacker, CEO; hereinafter, "NESTE"), one of the world's largest renewable fuel manufacturers, and will build a series of supply chains related to domestic transportation and refueling of RD.

NESTE's RD that ITOCHU will import and sell this time is produced using waste oil and animal oil, etc. as raw materials and realizes a 90% reduction in GHG emissions based on a life-cycle assessment when compared with petroleum-based light oil. RD is mainly used for trucks and buses, etc. for transportation as a so-called "drop-in" fuel and allows use of existing vehicles and refueling facilities without modification. It has already been widely distributed, mainly in the US and Europe.

As a prior action to the RD, ITOCHU ENEX realized its use for the convenience store delivery cars*2 of FamilyMart Co., Ltd. this June, in what was a first for Japan. Moreover, its use has been expanded to container drayage transport vehicles by A.P. Moller Maersk and vehicles at Haneda Airport by SAN-AI OIL CO., LTD. As a next-generation renewable fuel that can minimize introduction costs related to measures for realizing a carbon-free society and make a major contribution to GHG emission reduction, further expansion of its use is expected in the land transportation field.

Under the corporate philosophy of "The Best Partner for Life and Society," the ITOCHU ENEX Group will continue to realize a carbon-free society, reduce the burden on the environment and contribute to a sustainable society going forward, while simultaneously offering a reliable supply of energy as an energy company.
