Environmental Performance of AdBlue®

In Japan, nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) from diesel vehicle exhaust are subject to the world's most stringent regulations: new long-term regulations (from October 2005) and post new long-term regulations (from October 2009) that were established to protect the global environment and public health.
To solve the problem of simultaneously reducing NOx and PM, a solution was found in reducing PM in an engine and cutting NOx through exhaust gas treatment. This is known as the urea Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system.

By spraying aqueous urea into exhaust gas, NOx is broken down through a reduction reaction with the ammonia into harmless nitrogen and water. The introduction of this urea SCR system not only passes strict standard values, but is also expected to improve fuel consumption and reduce the load on the engine compared to other exhaust gas control technologies. For those reasons, the system has been employed by truck and bus manufacturers, becoming a mainstream exhaust gas countermeasure not only in Japan, but also in the U.S. and Europe, which have many diesel vehicles.

The aqueous urea used for this system is required to have very high specifications from the perspective of system protection and securing performance. Only products that satisfy the specifications can be called AdBlue®, as certified by the Verband der Automobilindustrie (VDA). In other words, AdBlue® is a certification of high-grade aqueous urea. This trademark is used worldwide, and vehicle manufacturers in the U.S., Europe and Japan designate or recommend the use of AdBlue® in urea SCR systems.

ITOCHU ENEX CO.,LTD. sells AdBlue® as part of our activities to address environmental issues.
